What Foam Board to Use Under Your Pool? (A No-Stress Guide)

So, you’ve just bought a shiny new above-ground pool. You’re already picturing lazy summer floats, cannonball contests, and maybe a floating drink holder shaped like a flamingo. But before you fill that bad boy up, let’s talk about what goes *under* it.

Yes, the ground matters. Grass? Sand? Dirt? Sure. But the real secret to a soft, safe, and long-lasting pool bottom? **Foam board.**

Choosing the right one isn’t rocket science, but pick the wrong foam and you’ll end up with a lumpy, pokey, or even moldy mess. No thanks. Let’s break it down – nice and easy.

The Golden Rule: Closed Cell Only

Forget the craft aisle. That squishy, open-cell foam you use for cosplay swords or nap mats? It acts like a sponge. Under your pool, it will soak up water, turn into a heavy, soggy pancake, and become a breeding ground for algae and bacteria. Yuck.

What you want is closed-cell foam. Think of it like a million tiny, sealed bubbles. Water can’t get in. It’s firm, durable, and won’t turn into a science experiment.

Top Contenders: XPS vs. EPS

Two main types pop up in the pool world:

- XPS (Extruded Polystyrene) – The superstar. It’s dense, smooth, and comes in pink, blue, or green sheets (depending on the brand). It resists moisture like a duck’s back and holds up under serious weight. This is your best bet for a buttery-smooth pool floor.

- EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) – The bead-board. It’s those white, bumpy sheets that look like a bunch of Styrofoam coffee cups glued together. It’s cheaper, but also softer and more crumbly. Water can sneak between the beads over time. It’ll work in a pinch, but XPS is worth the extra few bucks.

Verdict? Go with XPS – the pink, blue, or green stuff. You’ll thank yourself when you’re not stepping on pebbles next summer.

What Thickness?

For most round or oval above-ground pools, 1/2 inch (about 12-13mm) is the sweet spot. It smooths out minor irregularities without feeling squishy.

- 1/4 inch – Too thin. You might as well use cardboard.

- 3/4 to 1 inch – Luxuriously soft, but your pool will feel a little “spongy” underfoot. Also, it can shift more easily on slopes. Fine for smaller pools, but overkill for big ones.

Stick with 1/2 inch. It’s the Goldilocks choice – just right.

Quick Installation Tips (Because We’re All Lazy)

1. Prep the ground – Remove rocks, sticks, and anything that would hurt a bare foot. Rake, tamp, and level the area like your pool’s life depends on it (it does).

2. Tape the seams – Foam boards come in 4’x8’ sheets. Lay them edge-to-edge, then cover the seams with heavy-duty waterproof tape (not duct tape – the real stuff). You want a continuous, seamless floor.

3. Add a liner pad? – Some people put a thin tarp or geotextile fabric over the foam for extra protection. Not strictly necessary, but nice if you’re paranoid.

4. Drop your pool liner – And fill ’er up!

One Big Warning

Do not use the foil-faced foam boards from the hardware store (the kind with shiny silver on one side). They look tempting, but that foil can react with pool chemicals or corrode. Plus, the foam underneath is often lower density. Stick with plain XPS.

The Happy Ending

Your feet will thank you. No more lumpy bottom, no more mysterious rocks poking through the liner, and no more cold shock when you first step in (foam adds a little insulation, so the water stays warmer longer).

So go ahead – grab those pink or blue boards, a roll of good tape, and spend an afternoon making your pool bottom softer than a marshmallow pillow. Future you, floating peacefully with a lemonade in hand, will send a high-five back through time.

Now go install that pool and get splashing!
