Precautions for The Construction of Extruded Xps Foam Board Insulation

During the construction of extruded plastic panel (XPS board) insulation, it is critical to ensure quality construction. The following are detailed construction considerations to help ensure the effectiveness and durability of the insulation system:


1. Material Selection

● ▶ Qualified quality: select extruded plastic boards that meet national or industry standards. Check its density (usually 32-40 kg/m³), compressive strength (usually 200-500 kPa), thermal conductivity (usually below 0.035 W/(m-K)) and other performance indicators.

● ▶ Appearance check: Make sure that the surface of the extruded plastic board is smooth, free of damage, deformation and cracking. Avoid the use of defective panels, so as not to affect the construction effect and thermal insulation performance.

2. Grass-roots treatment

● ▶ Grass-roots requirements: ensure that the wall or foundation layer is solid, flat, dry and clean. Remove oil, mould releasing agent, floating ash and other adherents that affect bonding.

●▶ Levelling treatment: For uneven base layer, use cement mortar or other appropriate materials to level it to reduce unevenness in construction.

3. Bonding agent use

●▶ Preparation of bonding agent: Prepare accurately according to the instructions of the bonding agent product and mix well to ensure its bonding performance.

●▶ Application method: When applying the binder, keep it uniform and full to ensure that the area in contact with the extruded plastic board meets the design requirements. Avoid applying the binder too thick or too thin.

4. Extruded board installation

● ▶ Splicing method: staggered splicing should be adopted during installation to avoid butt jointing of board seams. Ensure that the gap between boards is controlled within a reasonable range, usually no more than 5mm.

●▶ Yin and Yang Corner Treatment: At the Yin and Yang corners, the extruded panels should be staggered and interlocked to enhance the thermal insulation performance and stability of the corners.

5. Fixings Installation

●▶Quantity and position: The quantity, position and depth of fixing pieces should strictly follow the design and construction specifications to ensure that the extruded plastic board is stable.

●▶Installation Note: Avoid damaging the extruded board when installing the fixing pieces, and do not apply too much force so as not to affect the effect of the heat preservation layer.

6. Fire prevention measures

●▶Fire prevention attention: the extruded plastic board belongs to flammable materials, the construction should pay attention to fire prevention, avoid open flame operation. Prepare fire extinguishing equipment to ensure that the construction site has basic fire emergency measures.

7. Door and window opening treatment

● ▶ Packing treatment: The extruded board around the door and window openings should be packed to enhance the heat preservation effect and prevent cracks. Ensure that the joints around the openings are firm and sealed.

8. Expansion Joint Setting

●▶ Temperature deformation: Set up expansion joints according to the design requirements to cope with building deformation caused by temperature changes. Expansion joints should be coordinated with other parts of the insulation system to avoid damage caused by stress concentration.

9. Finished Product Protection

●▶ Construction protection: During construction, take care to protect the installed extruded panels from collision, trampling and contamination.

●▶ Subsequent construction: The subsequent construction phase needs to be handled carefully to avoid damage to the insulation layer. Use protective measures to reduce the direct impact on the insulation layer.

10. Environmental conditions

●▶ Temperature requirements: The construction environment temperature should be no less than 5℃ to avoid poor bonding or other problems caused by construction under low temperature conditions.

●▶Wind and rain: The wind should not exceed grade 5, and the construction should be stopped on rainy days to prevent the rain from washing away and affecting the construction quality.

11. Construction Acceptance

●▶ Acceptance standard: After the construction is completed, acceptance is carried out in accordance with relevant standards and codes. Ensure that the quality of the insulation system meets the requirements, including the integrity of the insulation layer, the firmness of bonding and the overall effect.

By following the above construction precautions, the quality of extruded plastic board insulation construction can be effectively improved to ensure its long-term stable thermal insulation effect and energy-saving performance of the building.
