External Wall Insulation Extrusion Xps Board Or Foam Board Is Good?

Extruded xps board and foam boards have their own advantages and disadvantages in the application of external wall insulation, and extruded panels are usually superior to foam boards in terms of insulation performance.

 

Thermal insulation performance

The thermal conductivity of extruded xps board and foam board directly affects its thermal insulation effect. The thermal conductivity of extruded plastic board is generally between 0.028-0.038W/(m-K), while the thermal conductivity of foam board is usually between 0.03-0.04W/(m-K). Therefore, the insulation effect of extruded plastic board is relatively better.

 

Physical properties

Compressive strength: the compressive strength of the extruded xps board is significantly higher than that of the foam board, which is suitable for occasions that need to withstand larger loads.

 

Ductility: Foam board has better ductility, while extruded xps board is more brittle and not easy to bend.

Breathability: Foam boards are more breathable, while extruded xps board are virtually airtight, which can lead to condensation in high humidity environments.

 

Construction Difficulty: Extruded xps board have a smooth surface and require special treatment to increase the friction of adhesion, while foam boards do not require special treatment.

Fire resistance: The fire resistance of extruded xps board can reach B1 level, but it is not as good as some upgraded foam boards (e.g. real gold board, homogeneous board, etc.).

 

Cost and environmental protection

Cost: The price of extruded xps board is usually higher, while the price of some upgraded foam boards (e.g. real gold boards, screed boards) may be even higher.

Environmental friendliness: Extruded xps board are green energy-saving materials with good thermal insulation properties, which can reduce energy consumption.
